Plunge Milling with a 2-inch Diameter Tool on Vertical Machining Center

With a rigid machine tool and the appropriate blend of speed and torque, manufacturers can utilize wider diameter tooling in plunge milling operations to achieve higher metal removal rates for improved productivity. Featured in this video is a PS95 vertical machining center performing a plunge milling operation in cast iron using a 2-inch diameter Kennametal plunge mill. Cutting parameters for this operation included a spindle speed of 1,050 rpm and feed rate of 31.5 inches per minute. Step overs between cuts were set at 0.59-inches in X direction and 0.42-inches in Y direction.
