My daughter is at an age when several of her lady-friends have been (or are) pregnant. She told me that for them it is a rage now to record the shape of their pregnant belly in a small sculpture, made by 3D scanning and then 3D printing. In the Netherlands a number of companies (female-owned) are offering this service.
As she knows about CNC machining, she realized that such baby bump sculptures also can be made in wood, giving a more natural result than with 3D printing. So she made a 3D scan of a pregnant friend with her iPhone, and sent the resulting STL file to me. Next I calculated toolpaths with our DeskProto CAM software and machined a small sculpture in wood. It is ca 125 mm (5 inches) high, in hard maple wood. A bit of manual work was needed as well, to clean undercut area between arms and neck. The wood gives the sculpture a warm appearance, and the wood’s grain emphasizes the shape of the body. A nice result !
Note that we do not offer this as a service! We offer the DeskProto software, which allows you to machine your own sculptures – or even start your own business offering this as a service.
