Heart Box – CNC Woodworking – Making an epoxy and wood box with a CNC router

Hey CNC woodworkers! I decided to extend upon my heart bowl concept and turn it into a box. I started from scratch on a new design using Fusion 360, and came up with this more curvy and organic looking shape. I created my signature epoxy line through the middle of it, and synced it up so it all looked awesome as a jewelry box. I’m pretty happy how it turned out, but I definitely had a few stumbling blocks along the way. This box involves multiple setups to accurately align the pieces for my two sided machining operations using a CNC router. I’m using a Tormach PCNC 1100, but this type of thing can probably be done on any good CNC router. I show two boxes that I made: both out of hardwood cherry, one with bora bora blue tinted resin/epoxy, and the other with purple epoxy.

You can now get a copy of my “heart bowl” design and make one for yourself! I include the Fusion 360 CAD file, with my CAM tool paths, and all the design history. But best of all is a complete set of directions on all the steps I take to make the bowl; I spent days working on this document! The bowl is an easier project than this box; comment below if you want to have me release the box plans!

Epoxy notes: I have tried a lot of epoxy brands, and I generally like WiseBond epoxies, but I also have started experimenting with Liquid Glass. Liquid Glass seems to cure a little faster, which moves my projects along a little quicker.

Other keywords: this could be a great box or bowl to make for Valentine’s Day! Heart bowls and heart boxes. I use Fusion 360, but you could also use Vectric VCarve Desktop / VCarve Pro or Vectric Aspire — however, generating tool paths in those can be tricky for a complex shape.
