Chatter during turning is one of life’s unfortunate realities for lathe operators everywhere . . . and combating chatter usually proves troublesome, at best.
Fortunately, the Spindle Speed Variation (SSV) feature – available on all Haas lathes – can potentially reduce or even eliminate the effects of chatter during cutting.
In short, SSV speeds up and slows down the spindle continually during cutting, and changing spindle speed in this manner can often keep the cut out of the chatter zone.
This video gives an in-depth look at how the feature works, and shows examples of using SSV both with and without tailstock support. We conclude by taking a look at how SSV works in conjunction with two common G-codes: G96 and G50.
